Buoyed by first-place efforts from Henry Cox (113 pounds), Cole Hornbrook (160) and Wyatt Westfall (170), the Black Tornado scored 277 points to edge Henley, which scored 251.5 points, for the team championships. Phoenix, which was led by a runner-up showing from Trace Vega at 195, finished fifth as a team with 138 points, just behind Cascade (161.5) and Lowell (156). Cox pinned North Salem’s Brandon Quezada in 1 minute, 6 seconds to earn his championship, while Hornbrook pinned Henley’s Christian Perez in 1:36 and Westfall scored a 19-9 major decision over Cale Edmunds of Oakridge for their crowns. North Medford’s Anthony Neuenschwander (120), Thomas Hamilton (132), Luke Mackey (138) and Joshua Robbins (195) each won in their respective third-place finals. Tanner Ulrey (106), Robert Biddle (132) and Caleb Dix (145) settled for fourth place. Vega was a hard-luck loser in his championship match, falling 4-2 in overtime to Glide’s William Beard in a marquee matchup. The only other Pirate to reach as far as the third-place finals was Mark McAllister, who capped his run with a 2-0 decision over Dix at 145. REDMOND DUALS : At Redmond, Eagle Point dropped all three dual meets in the event but Michael Hammond, Gage Graves and Joseph Garcia each came up with big wins on a day when victories were hard to come by. The Eagles lost 56-12 to host Redmond, 37-30 to Bend and 49-22 to Lebanon in duals Saturday. Hammond (132) secured a pin in 5:41 over Redmond’s Davin Curry, Graves edged Tamione Dunnigan, 3-2, and Garcia topped Humberto Ruiz, 7-2, for EP’s lone wins in that dual. All three Eagles also picked up wins over Bend, which used three forfeits to score almost half its points. Bradey Thrash (113), Nabor Garcia (126) and Ryan Lorenz (145) each were multiple winners on the day after scoring wins over Lebanon. Skiing SOUTHERN LEAGUE : At Mt. Ashland, Crater’s Griffin Hokanson and Ashland’s Maddie Hunkele won boys and girls Southern Oregon League giant slalom events, respectively, on Friday. The races were state qualifying events for the SOL, which is made up of skiers from North Medford, South Medford, Ashland, Crater, Phoenix and St. Mary’s high schools. Hokanson’s combined total for two runs was 1 minute, 39.14 seconds, with a best of 48.97. Noah Catropa of Ashland was second and AJ Flores-Alatorre of South Medford third. Hunkele’s combined time was 1:48.44, with a top run of 53.99. Phoenix’s Amelia Volk was second and Ashland’s Frida Graumann third.
