Jackson County Health Officer Jim Shames said Friday that the individual, who has not been identified, was considered "low risk" for contracting Ebola, had not shown any symptoms and was not known to be in contact with anyone with the disease. The person, who was not hospitalized, cooperated with local and state health officials, took his or her temperature twice a day and was interviewed daily as part of federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols. "Everything went very smoothly, and that episode is over," Shames said. Shames said the monitoring proved a helpful exercise to prep health-care providers and others should a positive Ebola case reach Southern Oregon. "I think Jackson County is very well-prepared," Shames said. County health officials have declined to identify the person's gender or age, the area where the person lives, or which of the three West African nations that at the time had known Ebola cases the person visited. Shames, however, said the person under monitoring is not a health care provider. According to the CDC, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone were the three West African countries considered to have widespread incidences of Ebola when the person's monitoring began in early November. The CDC has since added Mali to that list. The CDC considers anyone who travels in any of those countries to be at risk for exposure to Ebola, whether they show any symptoms upon entering the United States. The Jackson County resident flew into the United States from one of those three countries and was interviewed by CDC workers, who notified Oregon Public Health about the person's travels, as is called for under state and federal protocols, Shames said.
