Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 13, 2005 Mustangs split twin bill against Eugene Pepsi Local Roundup EUGENE — Abe Eubank’s home run carried the Medford Mustangs to a 7-3 victory over Eugene Pepsi in the first game of an American Legion AAA Area 4 doubleheader Tuesday at Swede Johnson Stadium. Eugene Pepsi, however, rallied for three runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap for a 4-3 win to salvage a split. In Game 1, Eubank’s two-run homer capped a four-run third inning that gave Medford the lead for good. Dustin Smith’s double scored Jared Adamson with the first run of the inning. Chad Hegdahl followed with an RBI single. Eubank went 3-for-4 and added two runs to go with his two RBIs. After giving up three runs in the first three innings, Mustang pitcher Cole Rohrbough blanked Eugene the rest of the way. Advertisement Rohrbough (4-2) recorded nine strikeouts and allowed only four hits. Adamson and Ryan Odell each doubled and both went 2-for-4. In the nightcap, the Mustangs took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Cory Kent tied the game for Eugene with a two-run double. Kent scored the winning run two batters later on Shaun Peterson’s RBI single to hand Mustang reliever Kenny Licea his first loss of the year after five wins. Odell had two hits in the loss, while Hegdahl and Justin Meyer each notched a double for Medford (28-8, 5-3 Area 4). ASHLAND 22-4, NORTH MEDFORD 15-22 — At Ashland, both teams combined for 63 hits and 11 home runs in the American Legion A Area 4 doubleheader split at North Mountain Park. In the opener, the Ashland Pilots (8-14, 7-11 Area 4) trailed 15-10 before sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs in the sixth inning. Aaron San Nicholas hit a single and two-run homer and Wes Dodds had two doubles to fuel the rally. San Nicholas went 4-for-5, scored three runs and had five RBIs to spark the Pilots’ 16-hit attack. Ashland’s Max Gordon added three hits and scored five runs and Tyson Senestraro contributed two hits and four RBIs. For the North Medford Mavericks, Zack James went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. James hit a pair of two-run homers and blasted a triple. In the nightcap, James Horsley went 4-for-4 and accounted for one of three North Medford home runs. James had another three-hit game to go with three runs and three RBIs. The Mavericks also received three-hit performances from Trevor McCleery, Tony Salamone and Logan Odom. Little League Baseball DISTRICT 6 TOURNAMENT — At Ashland, Medford American Blue defeated Medford American Red, 10-7, in the semifinals of the 11-12-year-old event at North Mountain Park. Medford American Blue benefited from a 14-strikeout performance by Colton Cochran. Philip Jovanovic went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Corey Pine provided two hits and three RBIs to lead Medford American Blue. Medford American Blue will play Ashland at 6 tonight in the championship game, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Portland. Babe Ruth Baseball DISTRICT 4 TOURNAMENT — Phoenix-Talent remained undefeated to win the 15-year-old tournament Sunday and was one of four teams to advance to state. The state tournament begins Friday at The Yard in Eagle Point. Phoenix-Talent (20-0) went 4-0 in the round-robin event to finish ahead of the three other state qualifiers — previously unbeaten Upper Rogue (3-1), Ashland (2-2) and Central Point (1-3). Jordan Lewis turned in a dominant pitching effort in Phoenix-Talent’s second game, an 8-3 win over Upper Rogue. In 42/3 relief innings, he allowed one hit, no runs and struck out 10. In the same game, Kory Locken had two two-run hits, a double and a single, to key the offense. Phoenix-Talent’s Andrew George reached base 10 times in 14 plate appearances in the tourney.
