And while the first-team all-state senior pitcher had his moments, the second-ranked Black Tornado had more in claiming a 5-1 non-conference victory. After striking out the side in the first inning, Nickerson found North Medford (2-0) to be less amiable the rest of the way, as the Tornado broke the game open with a four-run surge in the third. "He had us handcuffed the first inning or so," North coach Brett Wolfe said, "but we were able to make some adjustments and put the ball in play after that." With the bases loaded and two outs in the third, Reese Lamson made sure North capitalized with a two-run single up the middle that bounded off Nickerson’s glove to score Beau Hovland and JC Rowley. After Lamson stole second, Tyler Engle scored on a passed ball and a double by Jimmy Ulrey plated Lamson. North senior left-hander Dustin Butler made those runs stand up in allowing only six hits with five strikeouts in a complete-game performance. Oregon City’s lone run was unearned, with Nickerson picking up two of his team’s hits. "Dustin pitched very well," said Wolfe. "He’s just a bulldog. He’s able to pitch through anything, and nothing seems to phase him. He’s the kind of kid you want out there in those tough situations." Rob Folsom tacked on North’s fifth and final run with a fourth-inning double off Nickerson to score Russ Vandell. North next takes the field at noon today against Forest Grove at Miles Field.
