Shane Watson, 18, was pinned between a Hyster material hauler and some shelving about 9:21 a.m. at the center, 7303 Highway 62, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. A fellow employee was driving the forklift in an aisle, where he apparently lost control of it, said Battalion Chief Rod Edwards at the Jackson County Fire District No. 3. The forklift swerved and the rear struck Watson in the aisle, Edwards said. Watson's fellow employees rendered him aid until the fire district's medical officers arrived at the scene within three minutes, Edwards said. Advertisement "We had paramedics right on top of him, and they did everything possible for him," Edwards said. "It's definitely a sad thing." The accident rattled Big R employees, and a chaplain from the Central Point Police Department responded to comfort them, Edwards said. Watson was taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center, but he died en route to the hospital, sheriff's deputies said. The state Occupational Safety and Health Division (also known as OR-OSHA) was called to review the case because it was classified as a work-related accident, sheriff's Capt. Rod Countryman said. OR-OSHA officials in Medford referred requests for information to division spokesman Kevin Weeks, who was not available late Monday for comment. Would you like to respond to this story?
