On the April 2 episode of “The Price is Right,” a contestant won a new car because of what the news media is terming “model error.” Manuela Arbeláez, one of the hostesses on the show, accidentally revealed the winning price of a Hyundai Sonata SE. The video clip is priceless. The contestant, Andrea, is playing a bonus game after winning her way to the stage. The game is “Five Price Tags.” Andrea has earned the chance to pick three of five price tags for the car, one at a time. If one of the tags she picks is the correct price of the car, she wins the car. She missed the first one, and Manuela reveals the next price — which happens to be the winning one — before Andrea had a chance to choose another tag. It’s Manuela’s reaction that makes the clip so humorous. She realizes her mistake and tries to put the tag back. Andrea yells, “I won it!” Drew Carey, the host, tells the contestant, “Congratulations, Manuela just gave you a car.” Manuela immediately covers her face with her hand and hides behind the column of price tags in embarrassment. Drew then pulls her out from behind the price tags, and she wipes away tears as she congratulates Andrea. I’d be crying, too, if I made that big a mistake. Of course, the clip was all over the Internet moments later. I haven’t watched “The Price is Right” in years, not since the Bob Barker era. Although it’s entertaining, it has never been one of my must-see programs. The only time I ever watched the show anywhere approaching “regularly” was with my mother. Mom, may the Lord rest her soul, loved “The Price is Right.” She loved it so much that she recorded it every day. When I went to see her, she often was watching it for the second time in a day. She loved everything about it so much that she could give advice to the contestants about how to play the games, which usually was sound. She loved it so much that she had preferences about which games were best. She was like a Las Vegas pit boss; she could give opinions about the odds of winning each game that were eerily on target. I don’t know how many times she made comments like, “Oh, she won’t win this one. Not too many people win this one” or “This game’s too easy for a prize that big.” She had it all figured out. Mom also knew all the trivia about “The Price is Right.” She could have told me the last time a model made a mistake on the show. Mom really loved that show, and she would have loved Manuela’s mistake. She would have been very forgiving. She would have said something like “Poor thing. Everyone makes a mistake every now and again.” Mom was like that. Fortunately, the producers of “The Price is Right” are like that, too. According to a story by AP Entertainment reporter Derrik J. Lang, Manuela said the producers “started laughing” when she asked if she would be fired, and that everyone concerned has been “so nice and supportive.” Of course they were. Although Lang notes that Manuela thinks her mistake is “the most expensive in the history of the show,” the whole point of a game show is to give things away. That’s how they make money. The odds were FOR Andrea winning, anyway. The game show industry is unlike any other American industry in that way. Fire Manuela? They ought to promote her to head of marketing. She just bought “The Price is Right” a whole lot of positive press for only $21,960. That’s genius. Manuela gave me something, too. Not only did her goof bring back pleasant memories of my mother, but the clip brightened a dreary day. When I saw it, I had just spent 22 minutes on the telephone with some faceless company trying to get back $9 it had overcharged me for service and $9.50 in late fees because I hadn’t paid the money I didn’t owe in the first place. That’s right — I spent 22 minutes trying to get back $18.50. Manuela gave Andrea $21,960 in less than 30 seconds. I had never seen Manuela Arbeláez before, and probably will never see her again, but the knowledge that she’s out there makes me happy. The way she handled her mistake with grace and humility — the sheer fact she felt embarrassed about it — gives me hope for a world that seems grim these days.
