Boy Scout golf tourney bigger than ever this year More than twice as many golfers will generate four times as much money as last year will when the local Boy Scout council hosts its annual fund-raising tournament Wednesday. Some 144 golfers and sponsors are expected to contribute about $20,000 in the 16th annual tournament sponsored by the Crater Lake Council of the youth organization. Last year, 56 golfers and sponsors contributed about $5,000 to the Scouts. Organizers credit a new venue - the Running Y Ranch Resort in Klamath Falls - and a new plan with the unprecedented success of the event. "You start very early and you get the right people around the table," explained Ed Roussell, outgoing development director for the Boy Scouts. "You have to find something a little different. The Running Y did it." Ken Hernandez of the Maentz Agency in Medford plans to swing a club or two. "With so many golf tournaments in the Valley, the opportunity to play one at the Running Y for a good cause was attractive," he said. Ranging from $500 to $700 apiece, foursomes sold out more than a month before the 1 p.m. shotgun start. Chaired by Mike Naumes of Naumes Inc., the steering committee for the event features a who's who of Rogue Valley community leaders, including former U.S. Congressman Bob Smith. Planning began months ago, said Roussell, a former YMCA executive in California and Nevada who has led several golf tournament campaigns. "I told them if you do 'A, B and C, you'll get X, Y and Z,' " Roussell said. The proceeds will support the general fund of the organization, which set an annual fund-raising goal of $30,000, Roussell said. "This is the biggest thing we'll do this year," he said.
