Is that true? — Eric, Rogue River There was some discussion about whether the physical work to take Fielder Dam out of Evans Creek would be a detriment to nesting bald eagles in the area, but state wildlife biologists say demolishing the dam will have no negative impact since no birds are nesting. Steve Niemela, an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist, says work to remove the dam north of the city of Rogue River would have been at least temporarily halted if eaglets were in a nearby nest. However, the bald eagle's nesting season is done here, Niemela says. "Every other eagle in Jackson County has fledged," says Niemela, who checked out the site. "Even those at higher elevations, which tend to fledge later, have fledged. "We're pretty confident it won't disrupt any nesting," he says. "There may be some juveniles hanging around there, but they should be done with nesting." Demolition crews this week were putting the finishing touches on the Wimer Dam removal further upstream, and crews started early prep work for Fielder's removal earlier this week, says Brian Barr, the project manager overseeing demolition.
