Letters to the Editor, June 27 Tuesday Jun 27, 2017 at 12:01 AM Medicare for all Health insurance cannot survive in the market. It can carve a niche, but it cannot provide the essential services as Medicare does for seniors. Health care must be governed by results, not short-term-profit-minded Wall Street. It should be provided to all Americans in the form of Medicare for all as we successfully do for our seniors. Entrepreneurs, doctors, et al., will get rich, as they should. Research and development will thrive, but mandated that providing care for all people is required, which should not be controversial, by the way. America has the best military in the world. It's a large government program never lacking in research and development. We can do the same with health care. We can start businesses easier and be better employees. We spend $3.2 trillion annually and bankrupt ourselves to get mediocre health results. That's not exceptional, patriotic or moral. Wes Brown Medford Helping students is great Regarding Vickie Aldous’s article, "Peer Power," in the Thursday, June 22 Mail Tribune, my opinion is that I think it is great that this man is putting all this effort to help these kids and have all 74 of them pass the second semester. That's great! I should know, I am a high school student and I know what it feels like to have failing grades and to get them to be passing is hard. For him to help those kids must be really great for them. It must be a great accomplishment to do all that. Whatever he is doing it is working. So good for him for doing that. He should definitely keep it up. It will help a lot of kids. Will Niccolls Medford Desperate for control The proponent of a gas export facility at Jordan Cove and a feeder pipeline from Malin to Coos Bay stole public records from libraries in Southern Oregon. Veresen, a Canadian multinational corporation, appears desperate for control of information about its export plan. Even if past analysis of effects to people and environment is “obsolete,” that is not a good reason to confiscate public records over the objection of a librarian. Last year, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rejected the gas export plan because it serves no public interest and would confiscate private property. FERC did not address 379 river and stream crossings of the new pipeline. Jay Lininger Ashland Focus on the real issue While Congress is arguing over the best business model for health care and how many citizens they can afford to cover, the American people sit on the sidelines, watching and waiting to see if Congress' discussion will ever focus on the real issue. Insurance is simply sharing the risk. It is forged from the belief that together we have the resources to care for our needs if everyone participates. Health care has become a huge business, and that is the problem. The primary goal of business is to make a profit. If profit was not the deterring factor then we could put in place a single-payer system, like Canada, Germany Sweden, Finland and other progressive countries. It’s not too late, let’s do it.
