Representatives from the SOU Admissions Office have registered 133 local students through the On-the-Spot program. The program, which traveled to 10 Southern Oregon high schools this winter, allows students to apply to and receive an answer from the university in 15 minutes. Admissions On-the-Spot events also have been held in Portland and during SOU preview weekends. The new Provost Scholarship awards $1,000 a year to students who are residents of Jackson or Josephine counties. To be eligible, freshmen students must have a 3.25 cumulative high school grade point average; transfer students need a 3.0 cumulative college GPA. Students also need to apply for admission by March 1, file an application for federal financial aid and be registered as full-time undergraduate students. "Obviously, we don’t want a repeat of last year," said Christina Dunlap, the director of marketing and public relations at SOU. The university saw an 6.2 percent enrollment decline in fall 2004, which resulted in a $1.35 million cut in state funding. Advertisement Key factors in the decline were freshmen who didn’t return for a second year, a decrease in last-minute applications, and a larger number of students admitted who did not enroll, SOU administrators said. Large graduating classes the past three years have also contributed to the fall in enrollment. The Provost Scholarship will be offered to new students in the fall and will be renewable for up to three years if the student maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the university.Full-time tuition and fees for Oregon residents is $4,602 this year. "Our goal is to provide access and to meet the needs of students in this region who want to attend a university," said Mara Affre, assistant vice president for enrollment services and director of admissions. "The feedback we got from a variety of different sources is that affordability is a huge issue in attending a university, whether it’s SOU or another university." A final On-the-Spot admissions event is planned from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the SOU Medford campus, 229 N. Bartlett Road.
