The suspects, Joseph Walter III, 38, and Cody Dempsey, 26, are believed to be staying in the area of Shady Cove, Trail and Prospect. The sheriff's department said the robbery took place at about 9:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, on Highway 62 outside Shady Cove. The 24-year-old victim had picked up Walter, Dempsey and an unidentified third party on Highway 227 near its intersection with West Fork Trail Creek Road. "He knew the people that he picked up," Sgt. Christine Bronson said. "I would call them acquaintances because friends don't beat you up." At one point in the ride, one of the men asked the 24-year-old to pull over. The man did, parking the vehicle along Highway 62 just north of Shady Cove, and was then allegedly attacked by the two men, who beat him until he fell unconscious, officials said. The third unidentified party did not participate in the assault. The man woke up on the ground to see his car, a 1996 Buick Park Avenue, pulling away. Bronson said he suffered multiple injuries all over his body but did not request medical attention. The car was found the following morning in the 1200 block of Old Ferry Road in Shady Cove. It had a blown tire and some front fender damage, though police are unsure whether that damage was already there, Bronson said. It isn't known why the suspects allegedly attacked the 24-year-old, though Bronson said she hopes that will come to light when they are finally tracked down. "Hopefully when we catch up with the two individuals, we will find out what the motive is," she said. Court records show Walter has previous felony convictions for first-degree burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle. Dempsey has previous convictions for first-degree theft and felony fourth-degree assault. He also has two open cases stemming from indictments on two separate unauthorized use of a vehicle charges.
