Wright leads race for money Together, Bates and Hunts spend $250,000 By Jill Briskey In the race for the Jackson County commissioner�s seat, Republican Cleve Wright has out-collected incumbent and Democrat Sue Kupillas. According to the second contribution and expenditure reports, Wright has recently collected $10,919 compared to Kupillas� $5,525. New contributions bring Wright�s campaign to a total of $26,320 and Kupillas� to $12,600. Kupillas, however, had a beginning balance of $10,546 compared to Wright�s starting balance of $8,567. Wright has secured the support of several local residents. Large contributions include $4,700 from Central Point rancher Ron Doffman to $2,450 from Medford landscaper Brian Washburn and $1,100 from Medford housewife Peggy Foy. Much of Kupillas� support has come from local businesses, including the Medford-based Oregon Realtors PAC donation of $1,000 and Boise Cascade�s gift of $2,597. As the election draws to a close, Wright has outspent Kupillas $29,269 to $23,305, leaving Wright with an ending balance of $208 and Kupillas in the red with a negative $594. Both candidates have evenly divided their contributions roughly among television, newspaper and radio advertisement. In one of the state�s most costly races, Jackson County state representative District 52 hopeful Alan Bates has recently out-collected opponent Jane Hunts, $57,485 to $44,417. Hunts, a businesswoman, still leads in money-collecting, bringing in a total of $144,927 and spending $125,875 during the campaign. Bates, a physician, has earned $131,039 and spent $130,012. Support has come for Hunts in the form of a $5,000 donation from Oregon Forest Industries and another $5,000 from OCAPA PAC. For Bates, the Committee to Elect Dan Gardner has contributed $5,000 and the OEA People for Improvement of Education has given $6,800. Bates is now left with a balance of $28,046 compared to Hunts� ending total of $20,066. In the race for District 50, Republican Rob Patridge has collected a total of $52,303 compared to Democratic incumbent Barbara Davidson�s $11,601. Republican Cherryl Walker has out-collected Democrat Lon Holston $6,888 to $14,792 in the race for District 51.
