LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 27 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 27, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 27, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News SB 941 unconstitutional Senate Bill 941 is unconstitutional on its face, i.e., it is an infringement on the right to bear arms because it is simply another form, seemingly benign, of government control. It's OK to own guns, but we, the authorities, want to know who has them and where they're going. It is a way to get pre-Obama-Feinstein guns registered and maintaining lists, which is what registered transfers is all about. Do you think the criminals give a rat’s derriere? Criminals are not the objective — citizens who can defend themselves are the real "target." Equally significant is that 941 represents another incremental step in the continuing and systematic use of government mind control. The law's tacit message is: "Know who has the real power, and it ain't you." Anyone who does as the law requires is manifesting in real terms how feckless the natural laws and rights of citizens in fact have become. A damn Starbucks card has more power in it than the Bill of Rights these days — i.e., are you paying attention, dear reader? Brian A. Cavallo Eagle Point Stop attacking Rickert Love thy neighbor as you love thyself. Powerful line; hopefully Jim Mannenbach realizes that his mean-spirited attacks on Cynda Rickert are in contrast to this teaching. Jim should read about bearing false witness. Jim has attempted to have local, county, state and federal agencies investigate Cynda, but every time, Cynda has been exonerated. Not one of Jim’s complaints has led to wrongdoing on Cynda, not one. In school we were taught to support democracy. Jim clearly missed this lesson. Jim calls the voters “brainwashed” because we don't vote the way he tells us to. That is pretty arrogant. Jim’s academic numbers are false. Just read past news stories since Cynda took over. The high school earned an “outstanding” rating from the state, and the graduation rate two years ago hit a new high, nearly hitting 80 percent (top 3 in the region). Jim says he works “for the kids.” If he actually cares for the kids, he will work with our elected School Board and the community-supported superintendent, Cynda Rickert. Jim should stop quoting his faith when he does not extend to Cynda the same grace Christ calls us to extend to others. Denise Wittstock White City Creative thinking Several centuries of scientific discoveries have shown that the universe is in constant flux. Even a single atom, though seemingly stable, is in constant movement and renewal. Humans, finding the transitory nature of reality scary, seek security in fixed objects — mere illusions of solid matter. Even new ideas unsettle many humans. Thankfully, innovators independent of groupthink turn their novel ideas into useful inventions. Alas, creative thinking escapes tea partyers. Perhaps that explains their obsession with the Constitution, which they’ve deemed unchangeable — better to serve as their weapon against political foes. To every argument opposing theirs, they respond simply: “That’s unconstitutional.” Legal scholar Garrett Epps suggests that if the tea party Republicans really listen when the Constitution is read aloud, they will realize that “the document they are hearing is nationalistic, not state-oriented; concerned with giving Congress power, not taking it away; forward-looking, not nostalgic for the past; aimed at creating a new government that can solve new problems, not freezing in place an old one that must fold its hands while the nation declines.” (The Atlantic, Jan. 4, 2011) While the physical universe proceeds inexorably, societal progress lags in this country largely because far-right politicians misinterpret the Constitution.
