Bruce was born June 22, 1933 in Corvallis, Ore. to Donald G. and Lucille McGregor. His early years were spent in California but the family returned to Corvallis, where his father had purchased a five-and-dime store. The family opened McGregor's Variety in Grants Pass. Bruce attended Grants Pass public schools, graduating from Grants Pass High School in 1951. Bruce attended Oregon State and was an officer in the Delta Upsilon fraternity. He graduated 1955 and entered the U.S. Navy. After two years active duty he joined the USNR Ready Reserve and was commanding officer of the USNR Surface Division in Grants Pass in 1968-1969. He retired with the rank of commander in 1976. Beyond his military service, Bruce was a long-time public official in Josephine County. He said that his interest in government was sparked as a high school student participating in Beaver Boys State. That devotion to public service stayed with him his entire life. While managing and then owning McGregor's Variety, he found the time to serve on the Grants Pass City Council and was twice elected mayor of Grants Pass. He was chairman of the board for Josephine Memorial Hospital and a director of the Grants Pass and Josephine County Chambers of Commerce. He was president of the Jackson-Josephine Health Planning Association, 1975-1976, and served on the Josephine County Hospital Authority. He was elected Josephine County Commissioner in 1987 and met the challenges of the declining timber industry head-on. His calm and thoughtful demeanor helped colleagues navigate many difficult decisions about the county's future Following his departure from government, Bruce was selected as coordinator for the Southern Oregon Regional Development office, guiding efforts to create secondary wood products jobs. In 1992, Bruce was asked to fill a vacancy as interim director of the Job Council office in Medford and was selected as permanent director after a few months. Bruce supported the health of the community by helping residents secure well-paying jobs. Faith and family were the two pillars of Bruce's life. He had three children from his first marriage and gained four additional children through his marriage to Heather McGregor in 1983. Their long and happy marriage was challenged by Bruce's late-onset multiple sclerosis, but it did not stop them from being active in the First Church of the Nazarene; renovating several houses in Grants Pass, Ashland, and Medford; traveling; and enjoying their grandchildren. Fly fishing was Bruce's passion. Many childhood photos feature him proudly holding that day's catch and in his later years he enjoyed the fellowship of the Rogue Fly Fishers. The Rogue River brought countless hours of joy, or frustration, if the fish weren't biting. Bruce is survived by his wife, Heather; his sons, Michael McGregor of Reno, Nev. and Craig McGregor (Tereasa) of Reno, Nev.; and daughter, Julie Britti (Michael) of Lone Tree, Colo. He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Pamela Palmer (Dave) of Jacksonville, Ore., Karen Woodin (Ron) of Joseph, Ore., and Lori Dunlap, along with stepson, Brian Hislop (Laurie Starr) of Medford. Also surviving are grandchildren, Kevin Deavey and Jason McGregor of Reno, Michael Patrick Britti and Alexander McGregor Britti of Lone Tree, Colo., Rachel Sykora (Terence), Ryan Somers (Brandi) of Carnation, Wash., Derrick Palmer (Greta) of Valdez, Ala., Jenny Thompson (Shaun) of Medford, Kyle Dunlap of Grants Pass, Kelly Dunlap of San Diego, Calif. and Mallory Darger of Harbor, Ore.; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Lilly, Lucette and Elkie Palmer, Alexis and Austin Sykora, Kendra and Aubree Somers, and Isaac and Brice Thompson. He is survived by sisters, Kathleen (Garey) Mark of Brookings and Mary Provant of Boise, and was preceded in death by his brother, C. Douglas McGregor (Bonnie) and brother-in-law Steve Provant.
