Volunteer judges preside over 750 senior projects More than 400 business and community members will become judges in the next two weeks as they review about 750 senior projects at Phoenix, North Medford and South Medford high schools. Projects range from glass blowing and fencing (with swords) to erecting a greenhouse to studying global warming. One student decided to blindfold herself for a week to write a paper on being handicapped. Another will present a study on existentialism, a philosophy that started in the 19th century and become popular during and after World War II. Students take on normal teenage activities like engine rebuilding and guitar playing and turn them into a senior project. Others take on more grandiose schemes. A senior in Eagle Point is trying to create a city park. The volunteer judging is coordinated by the Community Business Education Center, a nonprofit, business and public school partnership. Other school districts in Jackson County also have their independent senior project programs. The public is invited to review the projects and presentations at the schools during five different days at the end of May and beginning of June. CBEC staff member Jimmy Gomes said judges are still needed for Phoenix High School. Medford's two high schools already have their full contingent of judges. "We got an overwhelming response from the community," said Gomes. "It's a real positive experience with the business members and the community." Gomes said it has become somewhat easier to find judges because the pool of potential candidates increases each year. South Medford will judge 264 students from 12:50 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. About 300 North Medford students will be judged from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. About 160 senior projects will be judged at Phoenix from 12:15 to 2:30 on June 6.
