The charter school opened in fall 2010 at 400 Earhardt St., formerly Medford Opportunity School. At the time, nearly 300 students attended the school, which offers online and on-campus classes, as well as home-school support. Since then, enrollment has more than tripled, and the school has outgrown the 9,500-square-foot facility. “We have growing pains and we want to provide more options and programs," said Logos Executive Director Joe Vondoloski. “Anytime we want to have an event, we have to rent a space or find some (Medford School) District space that they will let us use.” A few months ago, Vondoloski was informed that the Wes Howard Foundation was interested in donating a chunk of its undeveloped property in northwest Medford. The property previously belonged to Wes Howard, who died in 2003 at age 87. He left behind an estate valued at $11 million and intended the property to be used as a sports park. Two soccer fields, a parking lot and restrooms were built on the land but the rest of the property remains undeveloped, as the Wes Howard Foundation does not have the funds to build a facility or additional athletic fields at the park. Attempts to reach foundation board members John Schleining and Rep. Sal Esquivel, R-Medford, on Thursday were unsuccessful. Vondoloski said Schleining was spearheading the project with the help of Esquivel, local land-surveying firm Hoffbuhr & Associates Inc., and land-use planner Clark Stevens, all of whom are donating their time. “Those guys are saving us thousands of dollars,” Vondoloski said. The new facility will be about 35,000 square feet and feature a library, computer room, college and career room, kids room, 12-15 classrooms and about 20 offices, Vondoloski said. Logos’ current facility has six classrooms and 10 offices. “In a perfect world, we’d move in in three years, but a lot of it depends on the dominoes that fall,” Vondoloski said. As of Thursday afternoon, the Jackson County Clerk's Office had no record of the property donation. Vondoloski said it's still too early in the process to know exactly what the new facility will cost, but he estimated "several million dollars." “We've been fiscally conservative and have been saving money for this since we started,” he said. “We also may do some fundraising and a capital campaign and that sort of thing.” Reach education reporter Teresa Thomas at 541-776-4497 or [email protected] .
