How many days does he have to do so and where does he do it? Someone told me the post office but they weren’t sure if he has to go to Medford or if the one in Eagle Point would be good. — Tom C., Eagle Point Yes, Tom, your son needs to register with the Selective Service System, and has 30 days after his 18th birthday to do it. Any U.S. Post Office has forms, and he can register by mail, check a box on federal student financial aid forms, or register at www.sss.gov on the Web. Almost all male U.S. citizens and male non-citizen immigrants living in the U.S. who are ages 18 through 25 need to register. The system is used to draft males into the military in the event a crisis occurs which requires more troops than the volunteer military can provide, according to the Oregon Bar Web site. Advertisement Males have been drafted primarily to supply adequate numbers of Army ground combat troops, and under current policy, women are excluded from front-line combat positions. So women are excluded from the draft. A man may be fined up to $250,000 or be given a prison term of up to five years if he is convicted for failing to register, so we hope he makes it in time!
