James Russell Shine, who turned 2 on April 24, was declared dead Friday afternoon at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. The boy’s body was being prepared Friday for organ donation, according to a Medford Police Department news release. His parents’ names were unavailable Friday. The boy was hospitalized Tuesday after a woman called 9-1-1 from a home in the 500 block of Midway Road to say she found him in an above-ground pool, unconscious and not breathing, police said. The child was given CPR at the scene, and initially taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. He was later flown to the Portland hospital, police said. Medford police detectives and officials with the state Department of Human Services and Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the boy’s death, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. Advertisement "We’re going to take a long look at the circumstances surrounding the drowning, and forward (results of the investigation) to the district attorney’s office," George said Friday. Police previously said the child was unattended when he somehow climbed into the pool, which is about three feet high. Several adults were inside the house at the time. A family member who answered the telephone Friday afternoon at the residence declined to comment. Last September, 2-year-old Steven Horvath died after falling into an above-ground pool at the Sams Valley home of his mother’s boyfriend. The boy’s mother, Crystal Ann DeLap, 25, and her boyfriend, Steven John Hunt, 52, have both pleaded not guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to felony manslaughter and child-neglect charges in connection with the boy’s death. Prosecutors allege the pair was negligent when they allowed the boy and his 4-year-old brother to play outside near the pool while unsupervised.
