Fans of In-N-Out will tell you the answer is yes. After all, some residents of the Rogue Valley — teenagers, it must be noted — have been known to make the five-hour round-trip drive to Redding just to eat at what once was the closest In-N-Out to Medford. Until today. This morning, Oregon's first In-N-Out outlet will let in its first customers, and company representatives actually met with Medford city officials to plan traffic control strategy. It seems In-N-Out fans are expected to drive in from all over the state in celebration of the burger chain with the cult following. In-N-Out has stuck to the business model that worked for the chain since its founding in 1948: Always fresh, never frozen ingredients, a limited menu, and no franchises. Employees are well paid — $11 an hour for the lowest-level workers, and six figures for managers. Fans rave about the quality of the food — real old-fashioned milkshakes, fries hand cut on the premises — the reasonable prices and the so-called "secret menu" that's not so secret since everyone seems to know about it. Maybe it's the lack of any Oregon locations that added to the mystique, but expect long lines of cars and possible traffic tie-ups on Highway 62 today. We'll wait a few days for the furor to die down before trying out the fare. And here's a tip: For a really extensive burger menu, quality that can't be beat, and a local business to boot, drive past the mall, wave at the lines waiting for In-N-Out, and hit Jasper's for your burger fix.
