Russell-Ross combo helps Phoenix sweep Knights MERLIN - The hitting of Kelsie Russell and the pitching of Tiffany Ross led the Phoenix Pirates to a sweep of a Skyline doubleheader against North Valley, 4-2 and 3-2. Russell went a combined 5-for-6 with a double, a triple and a run scored in the doubleheader. Ross wasn't a statistical machine, five strikeouts in the doubleheader, but she did provide enough solid pitching to win both games. "Ross pitched pretty well," said Phoenix coach Rick Ficek. "She didn't have any numbers but she spread the hits out." The Pirates (16-6, 13-7) earned the sweep on the heels of Ficek's announcement that he intends to step down from his coaching position at the end of the season. North Valley (11-14, 8-12) didn't help itself by committing four errors in the first game. All but one of the Pirates' combined seven runs were unearned. One defensive bright spot for North Valley was catcher Michelle Beck. She threw out five base runners, two at third, one at second and two at first.
