Zurlinden heads list of top junior bowlers Eli Zurlinden of Medford made a quantum leap in his performance over the past year and leads a list of five juniors to receive 2001 Medford Area Young American Bowling Alliance bowler of the year recognition. Boys and girls bowler-of-the-year honors were awarded to Zurlinden and Holly Gibson from Lava Lanes, Dean MacInnis and Kimberly Russell of Medford Lanes and Scott Hunter of Trinity Lanes in Ashland. The announcements were made at the Medford Women�s Bowling Association and Rogue Valley Bowling Association awards banquet Saturday. Zurlinden raised his average 45 pins to a 191 in a year�s time. The South Medford High sophomore has placed in the top three in every event during the past two city tournaments. In league play, he produced a 300 game and a 748 series, second highest for juniors this year. His other high series are 684 and 657. In this year�s city tournament, Zurlinden finished first in Division 2 scratch singles and all events. Other highlights for the Generation X League team captain are a second place in the high school district qualifying tournament in February, second place in the Marshall Holman triple-play junior scholarship tournament and first in the handicap division in the 38th annual Oregon State YABA tournament in Bend. Gibson, who turns 16 today, has bowled for almost 12 years. The Crater High sophomore has a high series of 664 and a best game of 262. Her high sanctioned league average is 185. Gibson has won an Oregon State Games gold medal along with a $250 first-place Coca Cola scholarship. She has finished fourth and fifth in the Oregon Junior Classic tournament, which qualified her for this year�s Tournament of Champions in June. She won the Division 1 scratch all-events title with a 1,636 pin count in this year�s city tournament. She also captured first in Division 1 at the 2000 Lava Lanes Junior-Adult tournament. Gibson is the junior director for Lava Lanes and Generation X League secretary and team captain. Eagle Point�s MacInnis has a 743 high series and 278 high game to his credit. In this year�s city tournament, he finished second in the team event, third in doubles and second in scratch singles � three pins out of first. He won February�s Coca Cola qualifying tournament that allows him to advance to state. MacInnis also was first in the Medford Lanes Merchant Masters pro-am with an 847 handicap series. He also posted back-to-back victories in the Oregon State Games and was 10th in the national state games. Russell, of Talent, was the 2000 recipient of the Jeremy Hasha sportsmanship award. She won this year�s city tournament in Division 1 handicap singles and all events. Russell has a high series of 610 and twice has bowled a 255 for her best game. The Ashland High senior was member of the Grizzlies� 2001 district championship team. She sits on three YABA committees and is a community service volunteer for the Oregon State police. Hunter, an Ashland High junior, won first place in the 2001 Lava Lanes pro-am. He has participated in bowling leagues at Trinity and Roxy Ann Lanes the past five years, with a high league sanctioned average of 127. His best series is a 566 and top game is a 237. Hunter has helped his high school junior varsity team to nothing below a top-four finish in each of its tournaments.
