PREP SOFTBALL/BASEBALL ROUNDUP Tornado softball stays perfect in SWC Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 9, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Apr. 9, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News ROSEBURG — For the North Medford softball team to win the battle of the untarnished Southwest Conference records on Wednesday, it would be forced to endure a rally by Roseburg, which erupted for five runs in the seventh inning on Wednesday. Luckily for the Black Tornado, it had just gone on a surge of its own in the top of the frame to pad its lead with three insurance runs and was able to hold off the Indians’ comeback bid in a 7-6 victory at Roseburg High School. The Black Tornado (5-2, 4-0 SWC) held a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh when it used four consecutive hits to lead off the inning — highlighted by Janelle Rodgers’ RBI double and — to gain a 7-1 advantage. If it weren’t bad enough for Roseburg (5-3, 3-1 SWC) heading into the final inning, North reliever Teanna Gonsalves recorded the first two outs via strikeout. With two outs and a runner on base, the Indians responded with four straight hits, including a two-run double by Jacey Conklin, followed by a two-run home run by Ashley Martin to help Roseburg cut the Black Tornado lead to 7-6. Gonsalves, however, recovered by getting the Indians’ Courtney Severson to fly out for the final out and preserve the Black Tornado win. North Medford pitcher Sarah Thomas earned the victory, going five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks and fanning seven. Rodgers went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored for the Black Tornado, while Grace Jovanovic scored twice. Both Gonsalves and Jovanovic went 2-for-3. HR — R: Martin. CRATER 9, ASHLAND 2 : At Central Point, Brittany Hassel pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts for Crater and Ashland suffered its first MWL loss. The Grizzlies fell to 2-1 in conference play and 8-3 overall. Ashland's runs came on Grace Lenthe's two-run homer in the fourth inning. Abbi Pearce went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to pace the Comets' 11-hit attack. Simone Turituri added two hits and one RBI and Brie Sheperd also collected two hits for the Comets (2-8, 1-2 MWL). Baseball SHELDON 2, GRANTS PASS 0 : At Eugene, Wyatt Johnson tossed a six-hit shutout for Sheldon in the SWC home contest. Grants Pass junior pitcher Cody Ekwall threw well but suffered his first loss of the season. Ekwall (3-1) allowed six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The Irish (5-4, 2-2 SWC) scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth inning when Zach Diehl opened with a single and one out later Justus Adams laced an RBI double. CHURCHILL 9, CRATER 1 : At Central Point, Churchill scored all of its runs over two innings, spurred on by five on Crater’s six errors, to claim the Midwestern League victory at Anhorn Field. Gunnar Asher was 2-for-4 and scored the lone run for Crater (0-9, 0-1 MWL) in the third inning after Caine Smith drew a bases-loaded walk. K.J. ASHLAND 4, EAGLE POINT 2 : At Ashland, Eagle Point couldn’t pick up on Steen Fredrickson’s fastball as the Ashland ace took a no-hitter into the sixth inning at North Mountain Park. With one out in the sixth, Fredrickson allowed his first hit on a single by the Eagles’ Nate Paige. Fredrickson went all seven innings, yielding one earned run on two hits and two walks and striking out 14 to up his record to 5-0 for the Grizzlies (9-1, 4-0 Midwestern League). PHOENIX 10, DOUGLAS 0, 6 inn. : At Talent, Drake Knoles threw a one-hitter and faced the minimum number of batters in the nonconference victory for Phoenix. Knoles walked one and fanned six. After allowing a single with one out in the fourth inning, he picked the runner off at first base. In the fifth inning, Knoles gave up a walk but later induced a double play. Ben Hague had two doubles, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored for the Pirates (4-5), who picked up three RBIs from Colton Beer and three runs from Kyle Botermans. BONANZA 4-4, PROSPECT 2-10 : At Prospect, pitcher Darren Stillwagon registered his first victory of the season and rapped three hits in the second game as Prospect salvaged a District 4 doubleheader split. Stillwagon (1-1), a senior lefthander, surrendered three hits and three earned runs in going the distance in the nightcap. Sophomore Ryan Buma, a first-year varsity player, had two hits, including a big three-run double in the Cougars' five-run second inning. Wade May added two hits, scored three runs and stole four bases. In the opener, May went 4-4 with one RBI and one run for Prospect (3-3, 1-1 Dist. 4).
