COLLEGE BASEBALL Harrison, Beavers take series He hits seventh homer as OSU downs Stanford Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 1, 2016 at 5:47 PM Posted May. 1, 2016 at 5:47 PM » Social News CORVALLIS — KJ Harrison hit his seventh home run of the season and Bryce Fehmel scattered one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief to send the 10th-ranked Oregon State baseball team to an 11-4 win over Stanford Sunday at Goss Stadium. The win gave the Beavers a series victory over the Cardinal, Oregon State’s sixth straight. OSU won 3-2 on Friday before Stanford took Saturday’s game 6-0. The victory capped off a spectacular three-game series, which saw 9,699 fans through the gates at Goss. Sunday’s crowd of 3,307 was the second-largest of the season at home, just 12 fans shy of tying the season-high. The Beavers rapped out 14 hits against six Stanford pitchers Sunday. Harrison, Christian Donahue, Nick Madrigal, Logan Ice and Kyle Nobach all recorded two hits. Of those 14 hits, three went for extra bases, with Donahue doubling and Madrigal tripling in addition to Harrison’s round tripper. That home run highlighted Oregon State’s five run first-inning. Madrigal tripled with one down and scored when Ice blooped a single to center. Harrison, the next batter, crushed a 2-1 pitch from Stanford starter Andrew Summerville over the fence in left. All five runs in the first were charged to Summerville, who was chased after recording just one out. It marked the fifth time during Pac-12 Conference play that the Beavers (28-12, 10-8 Pac-12) chased an opposing starter in the first inning. Summerville took the loss to drop to 3-2 on the year. Fehmel came on in relief of starter Jake Thompson in the fifth, and got out of a first and third jam with his first of six strikeouts on the day. The freshman proceeded to limit the Cardinal (20-18, 8-10) to three hits and a run in 4 1/3 innings. He improved to 8-1 on the year, and is tied for the league lead in victories. Up 5-3 entering the sixth, OSU scored two on a single by Madrigal and sacrifice fly to center to push the lead to four. Stanford scored its lone run off Fehmel in the eighth, but the Beavers answered back with four in the bottom half of the inning to go up seven. Billy King drove in two and Trever Morrison singled in a run to cap off Oregon State’s offense on the day. Thompson’s start lasted 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits and three runs — all unearned — with three walks and four strikeouts. OREGON 11, WASHINGTON STATE 7 : At Eugene, Oregon scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and beat Washington State and win the three-game Pac-12 Conference series in the rubber match at PK Park. With the game tied 7-7 in the eighth, Kyle Kasser stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered the winning blow with a two-run base hit to give the Ducks the lead. Nick Catalano jump-started Oregon’s six-run inning with a one-out walk followed by a ground-rule double by Tim Susnara. Daniel Patzlaff then laced a two-run single up the middle to tie the game. Jake Bennett provided insurance while capping a monster day at the plate, driving in a pair of runs on his career-best fourth hit of the game to give Oregon a four-run advantage at 11-7. Stephen Nogosek (2-1) shut down the Cougars in the ninth to preserve the victory. Oregon (20-17, 9-9 Pac-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first with some good fortune and hustle, as A.J. Balta struck out with two outs but reached first on a passed ball and promptly stole second as the WSU catcher was looking towards the dugout. Bennett then ripped a single through the left side to bring him around to score. Washington State (14-25, 7-14 Pac-12) got to UO starter David Peterson for a pair of runs in both the third and the fourth. The Oregon defense didn't provide Peterson much help in the third, as an error and a passed ball set up a two-run double for Dugan Shirer. In the fourth, a one-out single followed by a double set up an RBI groundout, and another run came in on a wild pitch. The Ducks picked up runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within a run. Bennett singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Susnara ripped a two-out, RBI double off the first-base bag. Slade Heggen and Travis Moniot got the fifth started with a hit-by-pitch and a single, respectively, and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Grebeck. Kasser then laid down a bunt on a safety-squeeze play to score Heggen and bring the score to 4-3.
