Dec. 24, 1915 STATE TEACHERS TO BE WELCOMED MONDAY EVENING The program for the formal reception of those who will attend the fifteenth annual session of the western division of the Oregon State Teachers' association in this city, to be given Monday evening at the Hotel Medford, has been completed. The exercises initiatory of the reception will begin promptly at 8 o' clock: Piano solo, Miss Venita Hamilton. Address of welcome, Attorney Gus Newbury. Response, H. H. Heardman of Portland. Male quartet, Messrs. Noel Lindley, Herbert Alford, Clarence Meeker and Lewis Bennett. Vocal solo, Miss Bess Bryan. Violin solo, Carlton Jones. Vocal solo, Miss Laurin Hinman. Vocal solo, F. L. Edmeads. Fruit punch will be served at the reception. After the formal exercises at the Medford hotel, a reception ball will be given at the seventh company's armory for those who care to enjoy it. LOCAL AND PERSONAL While C. C. Cate, the new Jackson county pathologist, was visiting Ashland a few days ago, Albert Jackson, of that city, gave him a few samples of persimmons grown on a three year old tree which he obtained from the department of agriculture at Washington, D. C. These specimens were the largest and finest appearing persimmons ever shown in this section. One of them weighed 341 grams, or nearly two thirds of a pound. It was luscious and of delicious flavor. Mr. Johnson did not know the name of the variety of persimmon it is, but Mr. Cate will ascertain and have something to say about producing them commercially in this valley. They are a delicious and wholesome fruit and ought to be produced in sufficient abundance for home consumption, at least. The stores of Medford appear to have been very little annoyed by shoplifters this week. That deftly-fingered gentry never has troubled the merchants of this city much, but less this season than usual.
