Thanks to near record-low snowfalls and warm spring temperatures, West Rim Drive and the North Entrance Road have been cleared of snow enough to allow travel on foot or by bicycle, Superintendent Craig Ackerman said in a prepared statement Friday. The roads will be open to cyclists and walkers while crews work to clear the roads for summer's vehicle traffic. Road crews will remove ongoing minor spring rock fall and encroaching snow banks, aiming to open the park's north entrance to all traffic May 15. The 15 miles of road from Rim Village along West Rim Drive to the north entrance, typically buried in snow well into June, has some of the most level terrain of the entire 33-mile Rim Drive, making it ideal for cyclists and families, officials said. Some snow remains on the ground at park headquarters. Snow depth is greater at many locations around the rim. All trails, including the Cleetwood Trail, are still closed and snow covered. Visitors should be aware of slippery snow patches and falling rocks. Steep snowfields exist at many of the overlooks along Rim Drive, and visitors should use extreme caution to prevent falls, officials said. Mazama Village Cabins and Annie Creek Restaurant are now open for the season. Mazama Campground will open on May 8 and Crater Lake Lodge will open for the season on May 15. The Rim Café and Gifts is open daily. Steel Visitor Center in Munson Valley is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information will be issued as portions of Rim Drive are open for travel.
