The teams are the first from Southern Oregon to advance that far. New Hampshire-based FIRST — For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology — organizes robotics competitions every year, part of its mission to get students interested in science and technology. The St. Mary's students have worked for months to advance to the international level, and we're confident they will represent this area well. Congratulations. Jeers — to the as-yet-unidentified young man whose blind-side attack on a homeless man at a Medford bus stop was captured on surveillance video. Police don't know whether the assailant and the victim knew each other — the victim was unable to speak after being treated for broken facial bones, and then disappeared without contacting police. But whether the cowardly act was the result of some dispute between the two or some sick random act of violence, it is reprehensible, and has no place in a civilized community. Cheers — to the Oregon State University women's basketball team, which will play Connecticut Sunday in the Beavers' first ever Final Four appearance, to the Oregon Ducks for making it to the Elite Eight in the men's NCAA tournament and to the OSU men's team for its first March Madness appearance since 1990. Oregon athletes are leaving their mark on the national scene. Cheers — to Tammy Westergard, director of Jackson County's 15 libraries, for being selected for a national Mover and Shaker Award by Library Journal for fundraising and program development work she did in her previous position in Carson City, Nevada. Westergard was hired to lead the Jackson County system last June. Since she arrived, she's been working on a multi-year plan to implement technology and business development programs here.
