FIRE UPDATED: Firefighters battle structure fire in Central Point MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 26, 2015 @ 1:17 pm Updated Aug 26, 2015 at 3:17 PM Posted Aug. 26, 2015 @ 1:17 pm Updated Aug 26, 2015 at 3:17 PM » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> A Central Point home was gutted by a Wednesday afternoon fire that drew firefighting resources from throughout the county. Firefighters from Jackson County Fire District 3 were dispatched at 12:36 p.m. to a reported structure fire in at 477 Beebe St., county dispatch logs show. "There was a lot of heavy dark smoke, indicating it was beginning to spread rapidly," said Deputy Chief Mike Hussey. Hussey said the Central Point police officers who were first at the scene didn't find anybody inside. The whereabouts of the homeowners at the time of the fire were unknown, he said. Hussey said police shut down traffic on Beebe to allow crews from Fire District 3 and Medford Fire-Rescue to access the scene. The deputy chief said it took about five engines to knock down the flames, which spread throughout the house into an attached garage and detached shed building. He said the the flames fortunately didn't make the jump to nearby wildlands. Hussey said the fire caused enough damage to the home's interior to render it uninhabitable, but declined to say whether it was a total loss. "That will be up to the insurance company," he said. Hussey said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. "It originated on the backside of the structure," he said. "Not sure if it was the inside or the exterior." Bundles of hay had been stacked neatly near the home but far enough away that they were not affected by the fire. "We have not seen any livestock," Hussey said. A neighbor who declined to provide her name said she has seen transients come and go from the home, where broken children's toys lay strewn about the yard. According to a 2010 Medford Police Department news release, investigators with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement team used a SWAT team to serve a search warrant at the home in April of that year in connection with an interstate drug-trafficking investigation that resulted in four arrests.
