Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 24, 2005 Strong defense vaults Phoenix past Rogue River ROGUE RIVER — Defensive coordinator Jacob Schauffler joined the Phoenix staff this season after coaching at Rogue River the previous three years. Schauffler’s knowledge of the Chieftain single-wing offense proved valuable as the sixth-ranked Pirates pinned a 42-0 loss on Rogue River in Skyline Conference football Friday. Rogue River (1-2, 0-1 Skyline), which has given the Pirates problems in the past, was held to just eight first downs and less than 100 yards in offense. Phoenix coach Gordy Crowston acknowledged Schauffler’s insight into the Chieftain offense was helpful. "This offense has always been difficult for us to defend," said Crowston. "Now we know the nuances." Advertisement The Phoenix front line of Billy Herman, Justin Travis-Adkins, Jesus Munoz and Nick Abney was instrumental in the defensive success. "They did a good job of keeping their linemen from pulling and off our linebackers," said Crowston. "Because of the way they run their offense, we had to play good team defense. Everybody had to stay home and do their jobs." Phoenix (3-0, 1-0 Skyline) took a comfortable 20-0 halftime lead. Phoenix wide receiver Joey Shepherd scored on a 26-yard first-quarter run and ran in the two-point conversion to give the Pirates an 8-0 lead. Then Ben Foster and Tyler Hammon added second-period rushing touchdowns. Shepherd, Foster and Hammon also scored on the ground in the second half. Phoenix gained 319 yards rushing, with Hammon picking up 90 yards and Foster 89. Quarterback Matt Hagert completed nine passes for 136 yards. "Actually, we were trying to stay balanced between the run and pass," said Crowston. "They were playing the pass, so it gave us more opportunities to run. We pretty much took what they gave us." Phoenix will host undefeated North Valley in a key Skyline Conference matchup next Friday.
