Philip Richard Lind Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jan. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Philip Richard Lind was born in Corvallis and passed away December 6, 2014 of metastatic melanoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Jessie Lind of Corvallis. His is survived by brother, Dan and sister-in-law, Andrea and their children Greg and Nicole; brother, Brian and sister-in-law, Melinda and their children, Allison and Craig; and brother, Doug; all of Corvallis. He is also survived by wife, Pam and son, John of Albany. Phil was a 1968 graduate of Corvallis High School and was active in the Boy Scouts. He received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from OSU, lettered in Diving; and earned a Masters in Music Education from Western Oregon University. He loved his nine years teaching music at Brixner Junior High in Klamath Falls, and was always delighted to run into his students. He also taught in the Phoenix-Talent and Halsey schools. It's a surprise to many who knew Phil for his charm and laughter to discover he was a drill sergeant in the Oregon U.S. Army National Guard. He made a mid-career change to pursue his love of computers, receiving a Bachelors degree in Computer Sciences from Southern Oregon University followed by twelve years working with the City of Ashland and over ten years with Linn County as the Information Technology Director. Music remained a big part of Phil's life. He was well known as a tenor, and sang and toured Europe with the OSU Choralaires and with the Rogue Valley Chorale. More recently, he sang with the Willamette Master Chorus and in the Albany First Presbyterian Church choir. Phil also had the acting bug, performing with the Albany Civic Theatre in the 1980's and more recently in the Music Man and Man of La Mancha. He performed in the Jacksonville melodrama and volunteered for many summers with the Britt Music Festival. Phil enjoyed being a dad, and was active with his son in the Boy Scouts of America Calapooia District in Albany. Phil, Pam and John were glad to share a wonderful time traveling together to Greece with the Heart of the Valley Children's Choir last summer. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, 1165 NW Monroe, in Corvallis. Memorial Contributions to a music education scholarship may be made in the name of Phil Lind to the OSU Foundation, 850 SW 35th St., Corvallis, OR 97333.
