Is this legal to obstruct the bike lanes? It’s real hazardous; you have to veer out in a lane of traffic to miss hitting the cans while riding your bike. Can Rogue Disposal start a campaign to educate people on the need to not obstruct the bike lanes? Can the police start ticketing people? — Chuck B., Medford Putting trash cans in bike lanes is a violation of the state’s vehicle code and carries a $104 fine, but it’s not a violation Medford police do much enforcement on, said Community Service Officer Howard Pendleton. Rogue Disposal works to educate its customers to keep bins out of bike lanes, recycling coordinator Denise Wolgamott said. In neighborhoods with bike lanes, the company tells customers to put their bins on the sidewalk so cyclists aren’t impeded. Garbage truck drivers return errant bins to a safer sidewalk location and either include a note to remind folks about proper placement or have customer service representatives call the home with a reminder.
