When we get 200 or so, we give them to a grade school. Are we wasting our time or do they really use them? — Fred, Central Point We're not sure which school is benefiting from your efforts, but if you are dropping them off at Central Point Elementary, the school does in fact make good use of Box Tops for Education clippings. Kristen Hathaway, the new Box Tops coordinator for the school, said the school is set to receive a $618 check after mailing in box tops collected at the end of the last school year and beginning of this school year. Schools send batches of the clippings in the fall and spring, and receive checks twice a year, said Hathaway, who is also a school staff member, parent and Parent Teacher Organization member. Most Box Tops for Education collection efforts are run by PTOs or Parent Teacher Associations. Box Tops for Education symbols are found on hundreds of grocery store items, including cereal boxes, soup cans and snack boxes. Each symbol is worth 10 cents to a school, according to www.boxtops4education.com . Hathaway said the symbols don't have to be neatly cut out with scissors to count. The expiration date just needs to show plus the Box Tops for Education wording. "It doesn't have to be pretty," she said. Community members can check with their local schools to see if they have programs to collect the box tops. Hathaway recommended dropping box tops off at the offices of participating schools.
