Please, please tell us when Avista is going to quit holding the residents of Delta Waters hostage. The block between Hawaiian and Tahitian is particularly bad. They dig it up, cover it up and come dig it up again. We are forced to listen to vehicles hitting large metal plates in the road day and night. It seems never-ending. Please get finished with Delta Waters and move on! Paula Waldrop Medford Global warming concern Whether it’s because of the pope, the drought, or regional wildfires, Americans are becoming more concerned about global warming and climate consequences. An April study revealed southwestern and western states, where the greatest impact is being felt, are the regions expressing the greatest concern. Eastern inland states, where problems have been less severe, exhibited the lowest concern. An October national opinion study then reported that 70 percent of Americans believe there is solid evidence of global warming over the last four decades. Republicans (56 percent) joined independents (69 percent) and Democrats (79 percent) with majorities agreeing. Meanwhile, the number in denial has plummeted to 16 percent. Another recent study revealed a 90 percent positive response to the question “Do you think climate change is occurring?” among Democrats with 59 percent agreement among Republicans. The corporate fossil fuel campaign of denial is failing. Even these values fall below the consensus among climate scientists, where over 95 percent agree the planet is warming and humans are contributing. It is disturbing that so many local elected representatives claim there is no global warming. Oregon may be a minor contributor to the problem, but we must take responsibility for ourselves and become part of the solution. Alan Journet Jacksonville Paying our bills Some Republicans in Congress are again threatening to refuse to raise the federal debt limit. If this occurred the federal government would not be able to pay its bills. It would have to suspend certain pension payments, withhold or cut the pay of soldiers and federal workers, or delay payments of interest, which would constitute default. They use this tactic to try and achieve results they cannot obtain through the normal give and take of the legislative process. Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize any new funding, it is simply paying the bills that Congress has already approved. Refusing to raise the debt limit would be like going to a restaurant, buying a meal and then leaving without paying. It's time for the majority party in Congress to start behaving as responsible adults, instead of petulant toddlers who throw a temper tantrum when they don't get their way. David Eisenberg Medford Legal but dangerous Thousands die every year because of cigarettes, but they’re legal. Thousands die every year because of alcohol, but it’s legal. Now thousands die every year from guns, but they’re legal also. In order to make everyone happy maybe an illegal drug, like marijuana perhaps, could be made legal …oh ... that’s right they made it legal already! Of course, if you noticed, I said, "they" (the government) made it legal, not "we" the people, who want it done away with before it leads to more tragedy. Isn’t it time for America to leave the Dark Ages and enter the 21st century? Curt Kline Medford Oppose nickel mining Like many of you, I take pride in the region I live in, and also take great exception to outside influences that detract from it. Along with 30,000 community members and more than 200 local businesses, I sincerely care about parts of our community currently being subjected to such outside influences: near O’Brien at Rough and Ready Creek, near Gold Beach along Hunter Creek and along the north fork of the Smith River. The proposed nickel strip mines at these locations would defile remarkable landscapes and sully an extraordinary array of resources currently available to our community in exchange for brief financial gains to large corporate interests. The EPA claims the metal mining industry is the greatest toxic polluter in the U.S., a characteristic of an industry I find incompatible with an area containing some of the most pristine waters and ecosystems in our nation. I urge the community to support the Southwestern Oregon Watershed and Salmon Protection Act and to support any efforts in preventing metal mining operations in these areas.
