Regardless of the outcome, we are all very well served by having such an open process. Plus we are very fortunate to have county managers who are willing to risk their livelihoods to protect the integrity of our governmental operations. We only need to look at the financial situation of other O & C counties like Josephine County for another example of how lucky we are to have Danny Jordan and these professionals working for us. Chuck Root Phoenix We're meaner, not safer It is the best of times, it is the worst of times: The holiday season inspires us to be thankful for our blessings and share with those less fortunate; election season urges us to “make America great again” by walling it off, shutting down mosques and deporting millions of the less fortunate. We’ve overcome slavery and intolerance to become a nation where people of all races and religions can live together in relative peace. America has never been greater — don’t let demagogues destroy it. Now they’re fomenting hatred of Islam and fear of those displaced by our destabilization of the Middle East. Millions are fleeing the chaos unleashed in the region by our clueless invasion of Iraq — 4 million from Syria alone. We have admitted 2,000 to this country, or 0.0005 percent. The vetting process already takes two years. Turning a refugee crisis into a partisan campaign issue makes the country meaner, not safer. Let’s show our greatness by showing some compassion. Terrorism occurs routinely in the U.S., perpetrated mainly by deranged Americans with easy access to massive firepower. Passing sensible gun laws would do far more to curb the problem than turning away helpless refugees. Michael Steely Medford Don't just Google it In “A political agenda” by Jeff Gutting of Jacksonville, published Nov. 27, the writer states that global warming/climate change is “phony science started politically by the UN’s IPCC.” He suggests we "Google ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle.’” I suggest you do so, and go down a few entries to the Wikipedia article. It objectively points out many of the falsehoods and misleading half-truths. That Wiki article shows the absurdity of the premise that “the earth has not been warming for over 18 years.” I am not, at the outset, a believer in this, that, or the other thing. I prefer to look at information and deduce conclusions. Some people seem to have some predefined belief, and then look for information to support such a construct. If one believes in a flat earth, one can find evidence to support the flat earth theory. That “You can Google it” is not a demonstration of the veracity of a belief. Lawrence Andreas Medford Our homegrown threat Regarding terrorism, "power" is a driving force. It has nothing to do with life nor freedom nor even religious conviction. It is, at its basest, insecurity and weakness. That may explain terrorist groups but let us not be distracted by them. Let us look at what is happening here. We have representatives genuflecting to corporations that are adulterating our food supply, compromising our soils and taking away our freedoms to know what we are eating. This country could be brought to its knees in just a very few short years without anyone hearing the shot of a rifle. Look no further, America. The enemy is here.
