Ashland’s hopes for a potential trophy in the boys tournament took a hit at the Portland Tennis Center when top singles players Ross Mather and Kyle Lachmund each came up short in their first-round matches. Mather, who finished second to Roseburg’s Spencer Grieb at last week’s district tourney, dropped a tough opener to McMinnville senior Zach Anderson, 6-4, 6-4. The Grizzly senior will open consolation play today against Redmond junior Nathaniel Jacobus. Lachmund, a sophomore, lost to Andrew Persen of David Douglas, 6-3, 7-5, in their opener. Lachmund, the SOC’s No. 3 seed, next faces Todd Logan of Lakeridge in today’s consolation play. The Grizzlies’ No. 3 doubles team of Loren Woodley and Jack Turner also came up short in their pigtail match Thursday, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Scott Uyeda and Kyle Dunscomb of Centennial. North Medford’s doubles team of David Longmire and Michael Tribble also are slated to make their state debuts today. The lone SOC winner on the boys side Thursday was Grieb, who beat Barlow freshman Kevin Sayson, 6-1, 6-3. Roseburg’s Andrew Besson lost his pigtail match to Grant’s Willy Nolan, 6-2, 6-2. On the girls side at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ashland’s Kayla Moyse opened her third state tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wilson freshman Christine McFadden. Moyse, who has lost in the second round to the eventual singles champion the past two years, will take on top-seeded Yvette Ly of Centennial in today’s second round. South Medford freshman Sam Ruffe, the No. 4 singles player from the SOC, pulled off the biggest upset of the day when she beat eighth-seeded Devin Daugherty of South Eugene, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Ruffe advances to the second round and will face Roseburg’s Masha Los, who beat McMinnville senior Casey Coleman 6-3, 7-5 in her opener. Ashland’s Brianna Lescher dropped to the consolation bracket in singles with her first-round loss to Mountain View senior Mallory Byers, 6-4, 7-5. Brianna Lescher will play Gresham freshman Kristine Hoang today. North Medford freshmen Sarah Louie and Alex Jenner, the SOC’s only doubles team to play Thursday, lost their pigtail match 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to West Linn’s Christiana Cha and Alex Smith. North Medford’s top doubles teams of McKenzie Hilmer and Lauren Wilson and Sonia Aguilera and Erica Schultz open play today. Hilmer and Wilson were the state runners-up last year, and are seeded No. 2 this year. Also set to begin play today in doubles are Roseburg seniors Galaxy Slight and Michelle Davis.
