Yreka man sculpted crying cow Just south of Yreka and north of Grenada on the east side of Interstate 5 is a metal sculpture of a bawling steer. I am curious as to its origin, its owner and the reason for its existence and placement. -- Sandy W., Medford First things first, Sandy -- that's a cow, not a steer. "Steers don't have big udders like that," said Yreka resident Ralph Starritt, who sculpted the cow with the help of volunteers and donated it to the Siskiyou Focal Arts Committee, a group committed to placing art objects around Siskiyou County. About four years ago, the group put the larger-than-life metal-scrap cow onto land belonging to rancher Fred Burton. If you keep your eyes open in the next few months you soon may see another of Starritt's creations grazing along Interstate 5: a buffalo. The buffalo is within a month of being completed but has not yet found a buyer or a home. So instead of leaving it in the back yard, Starritt will place it outside of Starritt Studios on the west side of the freeway next to Jim Wilson Ford in Yreka.
