In a letter sent out to students enrolled in classes for summer and fall 2016, college officials alleged that 28-year-old John Tate, who is not a student at the school, exposed himself to a staff member Friday. The incident occurred in a financial-aid office on the Riverside campus in Medford, according to Medford police. Tate was arrested July 1 and remained Thursday in the Jackson County Jail without bail on a probation violation, jail records show. He was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court on a public indecency charge Tuesday, to which he pleaded not guilty. A pretrial conference has been scheduled for Aug. 8. Tate has been convicted of failing to report as a sex offender multiple times, court records show. Additional felony convictions include assault, coercion and first-degree theft. The letter, sent out Tuesday with a photo of Tate, asked students to notify campus security if they see Tate on campus again, and it reminded students they can request security escorts to and from their vehicles when the campus is open. It's not the first time such a warning has been issued, RCC officials said. "Any time we come across a situation where we're concerned for students' safety, we're going to send out these timely warnings," said Chauncey Kieley, RCC's compliance coordinator and deputy Title IX coordinator. A similar notification was sent out to students more than two years ago following a sexual assault in a bathroom. "They're quite infrequent. Generally we have a very safe campus," Kieley said. Kieley said such notifications are required under the Jeanne Clery Act. The act, passed in 1990, according to the Clery Center for Security on Campus website, requires " all colleges and universities who receive federal funding to share information about crime on campus and their efforts to improve campus safety, as well as inform the public of crime in or around campus." The act also requires support services for victims. Information is also available through an annual security report the college files, as required by the act.
