PREP FOOTBALL Cascade aerial assault too much for Eagles Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 3, 2015 at 12:27 AM Updated Oct 3, 2015 at 12:37 AM Posted Oct. 3, 2015 at 12:27 AM Updated Oct 3, 2015 at 12:37 AM » Social News Cascade Christian’s Haiden Schaan orchestrated a potent air attack against second-ranked Santiam Christian Friday. Schaan passed for four touchdowns as the Challengers upset the previously unbeaten Eagles 45-14 in nonleague football at U.S. Cellular Community Park. “It was all about believing in ourselves,” said Cascade Christian coach Jon Gettman, whose team lost to the Eagles in overtime last year. “We’re a talented team and have guys that can do exceptional things.” Cascade Christian (2-3) scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding 42-0 halftime lead. Schaan, a sophomore quarterback, was 26-of-41 passing for 283 yards and two interceptions. “For him, it was staying calm and collected,” said Gettman. “He read the defense and took what was given to him.” Kevin Wheeler hauled in a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes. Schaan found Wheeler from 20 yards out for the Challengers’ first TD, then hooked up with the speedy senior receiver for a 13-yard score. Wheeler also led the Challengers defense with seven tackles. “Kevin is a kid we talked to about stepping up,” said Gettman. “He’s a player. He made plays everywhere tonight.” Zack Fralich, who led the Challengers with 85 yards rushing, rumbled for a 7-yard TD run to begin the second-period onslaught. Schaan had a hand in the next three scores. Schaan sandwiched a 1-yard TD run between scoring passes of 26 and 10 yards to wide receiver Carson Cochran. Gettman remarked the Challengers did not come into the game intentionally planning to pass: “It just turned out that way. We saw some opportunities but nothing that would dictate one way or another.” Cascade Christian amassed 491 yards in offense to 197 for the Eagles (4-1). The Cascade Christian defense forced four turnovers — two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Senior defensive end Brandon Winter and linebackers Matt Miller and Stephen Christensen were stalwarts in helping the Challengers shut out Santiam Christian in the first half and limiting the Eagles to just one offensive touchdown.
