COLLEGE SOU athletes earn academic honors Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 28, 2015 at 8:33 PM Posted May. 28, 2015 at 8:33 PM » Social News Southern Oregon University runners Eric Ghelfi, Rebecca Lupescu and Jessie Rozario have been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 team, while Alexa Gonzalez and Dylan Paulk have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete recognition. The Capital One program represents the NAIA's most prestigious academic honor, designed to recognize student-athletes for their combined performance athletically and in the classroom. Winners are voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and Ghelfi, Lupescu and Rozario will all be entered into the Academic All-American voting pool. To be eligible for the Daktronics award, one must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 and junior or senior academic status. A total of 21 SOU athletes became Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes throughout the 2014-15 season. Ghelfi, who last year earned the same accolade, is a psychology major with a 3.85 GPA. He was an NAIA All-American performer this season in cross country, placing ninth at the NAIA Championships, and in track, placing seventh in the 10,000-meter race at the NAIA Championships. Lupescu, a 3.59 student in pre-physical therapy, took 50th at the NAIA Cross Country Championships and qualified automatically for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the second year in a row, placing 16th in the 10K. She was also Academic All-District in 2014. Rozario broke SOU's 1,500-meter record and qualified for the NAIA Championships with a time of 4:36.50, ranking No. 1 in the Cascade Conference. A health and physical education major with a 3.63 GPA, she placed second in the 1,500 and fifth in the 800 at the CCC Championships. She was also 22nd at the CCC Cross Country Championships to qualify for the NAIA meet. Paulk, a 3.50 student in the business administration department, became the NAIA men's 5,000-meter champion last Saturday in come-from-behind fashion. He also won the CCC title, and the Raiders had never before boasted an All-American in the event. Gonzalez (3.69, pre-physical therapy) was one of the top all-around and most improved softball players in the CCC, starting every game at third base and batting .367 with team-highs of five home runs and 32 RBIs. She received All-CCC honorable mention.
