Mail Tribune 100, March 21, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 21, 1916 ASHLAND SPRINGS MINERAL WATER FREE FROM GERMS The following report from the state board gives the Ashland project the cleanest kind of slate, states in no mincing manner that the waters are "exceptionally pure," and puts a decisive end to all doubt as to the purity of the waters and sanitary condition of the mineral water plant: "Oregon State Board of Health, Portland, March 17, 1916. "Mr. Bert Greer, chairman Springs Water Commission, Ashland, Ore.: "Dear Sir: This office submits the following report on the analyses made on three samples of water from your supply, namely: No. 1 from the Dodge well intake; No. 2 from the new lithia well intake; No. 3 from the fountain outlet of the new lithia well. The object of these analyses is to determine the number of bacteria which are present in one cubic centimeter of the water. Tests are also made for the presence of bacteria of the colon group. This denotes contamination. Examination of these three specimens shows the water to be exceptionally pure; in fact, the water could scarcely contain fewer organisms unless it were distilled and kept sterile. Specimen No. 1 from the Dodge well intake yielded 8 bacteria per c. c., and there was no formation of gas in inoculated media of lactose bile. This denotes there was present no organisms of the colon group, consequently no contamination. Examination of specimen No. 2, new lithia well intake, showed but 6 bacteria per c. c. There was no fermentation and consequently no contamination. No. 3, lithia outlet, showed four colonies per c. c., which is very exceptionally low. There was no gas formation, consequently no contamination. Sincerely yours, David N. Roberg, State Health Officer." LOCAL AND PERSONAL Judge Wm. M. Colvig, tax attorney of the Southern Pacific, was a visitor in Medford Tuesday. He reports the marriage of his son, Vance, popularly known as "Pinto," the cartoonist, to Miss Mary Salvin at Portland. The marriage was a surprise to the Colvig family, the first knowledge of it being a phone request asking the judge if he wanted to see his new daughter-in-law. Pinto has a position with the Hicks-Chatten Engraving Co.
