November 01. 2014 12:01AM Since You Asked: Cut to the chase on sidewalk cuts There was recent sidewalk work on Barnett Avenue, where they created several sidewalk cuts (kike the ones at street corners). But there were already plenty of driveways that allowed access to the street, some only a few feet away from the new construction. Are there more of these to come? — David E., Medford Those driveways may only be a few feet away, David, but Medford public works officials tell us federal law requires that every intersection have those ramps installed when a street receives an asphalt overlay. That includes at corners and T-intersections. This is all under the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to Medford Public Works Director Cory Crebbin. Over the past two years, about 86 ADA ramps have been installed as required around town to the tune of about $340,000. Driveways also can serve as the ADA ramp, but it has to be in the right location and has to have geometry that conforms to ADA standards. Now, to answer your main question: Yes — more are on the way. Crebbin says there is a sizable list of locations planned for over the next year. Those spots include parts of North Central Avenue, South Oakdale Avenue, Garfield Street and Stewart Avenue.
