The West Nile virus was first isolated in 1937 from a feverish adult woman in the West Nile District of Uganda in Africa. The disease was later characterized in Egypt during the 1950s. It became recognized as a cause of severe human meningitis or encephalitis (inflammation of the spinal cord and the brain) in elderly patients during an outbreak in Israel in 1957. Equine disease was first noted in Egypt and France in the early 1960s. West Nile virus first appeared in North America in 1999, and an infected crow found Aug. 6 near Vale made Oregon the last of the lower 48 states with the virus.
