Vikings ground Hidden Valley passing attack, notch 14-6 win Prep football playoffs FLORENCE -- Hidden Valley's vaunted passing attack was matched against Siuslaw's stingy defense in the Class 3A first-round football playoffs Saturday. The Vikings kept the Mustangs' offense under wraps for most of the game and posted a 14-6 victory at Hans Petersen Memorial Field. The Vikings (8-2) advance to play Philomath in the second round. The Far West League runner-up opened the season with a 23-20 overtime loss to Philomath. Hidden Valley, the Skyline Conference No. 3 team, finished the season with a 7-3 record. Hidden Valley was limited to 185 yards in total offense. The Mustangs only managed 2 net yards on 19 rushes and were intercepted three times. "We have a couple of good defensive people up front and our secondary is pretty darn good," said Siuslaw coach Tim Dodson. "Our secondary kids have been holding teams to under 50 percent passing all year. With the pressure we brought up front and the play of our secondary, we did a great job against one of the better football teams we've played all year." Siuslaw opened the game on a dynamic note when all-league receiver Cody Weeks returned the opening kickoff for an 86-yard touchdown. The Vikings increased the lead to 14-0 off a long third-quarter drive that was capped on Jerod Torgison's 3-yard TD run. Hidden Valley struck early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Matt Kennedy hooked up with Dereck Horning on an 84-yard scoring play. "They beat us once on man coverage over the top," said Dodson. "It was a great pass and a great catch. Our kid was right there and I thought he had the pick." Senior quarterback Matt Davidson accounted for 213 of the Vikings' 303 yards in offense. Davidson passed for 113 yards and rushed 19 times for another 100 yards. Third-ranked Glendale (10-0) totalled 417 yards in offense, with 232 coming on the ground. Bonanza, the No. 2 team from the Southern Cascade League, was limited to 135 yards rushing and 51 passing. Glendale quarterback Curtis Foster was 10-of-12 passing for 165 yards and one interception. John Meirndorf was the Pirates' leading receiver with six catches for 97 yards and one touchdown.
