Born in Klamath Falls, Ore. he spent his youth in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. He graduated from Prineville High School in 1945 while also attending Oregon State College (OSU) his senior year. Near the end of World War II, he volunteered for the Merchant Marines. Afterward he worked as a cement tester at the Lehigh Portland Cement Company in Metaline Falls, Wash. before being inducted into the U.S. Army. He served as a Corporal in the Korean War with the 7th Infantry. After an honorable discharge, John worked as a lab technician in southern California before settling in the Rogue Valley. He worked for the Medford School District as custodian and courier, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed a long retirement, continuing his favorite pursuits of golf, photography, chess, automobiles, painting, mathematics, and computer programming. Though quiet, he had an ironic sense of humor, was generous and independently minded, traits cherished by his daughter and son. John was preceded in death by his parents, Harold A. Locke and Nell McKay Locke. A memorial service will be held at 2: 00 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore.
