A police officer said Jonathan was in a car accident. The doctor said he may not live, which led to a hospital vigil. Prayers, food, snacks, and cards helped ease the daily wait, but Jimmy John's Sandwich Shop will forever have a special place of remembrance. On the third trip to pick up a sandwich order, I was greeted at the door by the owner with a huge bag, three times what I had ordered. He said it was their gift, along with their prayers, at a very difficult time for a family he had never met. His gesture of kindness was so appreciated and I would like to acknowledge his generosity. Jimmy Johns serves their community sandwiches, but that day they served a family in need much more than the bag full of food, but the generous gift of kindness, friendship and prayers. If we wish to keep global warming below 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels — to achieve the warming limits international agreements have set — we must take serious action immediately. Failing to do so will likely consign future generations, our children and grandchildren, to an unlivable planet. This is inte-generational justice. It is evident there is no appetite for action at the federal congressional level, so we must take the moral high road in Oregon and join those states that are already addressing the problem by capping greenhouse gas emissions. The best chance for doing this is HB 3470: the Climate Stability and Justice Act. Modeled on similar programs in California and the Eastern United States, where emissions have been reduced and economies are succeeding unimpeded, this bill will similarly work here and is the one favored in opinion polls in Oregon by voters in both major parties. Anyone who can see the climate chaos — heat waves, reduced snowpack and water, droughts, and wildfires, that global warming is causing should support HB 3470 and contact their state representatives to do likewise. Both the Pentagon and the Center for Naval Analyses issued reports in 2014 detailing the immediacy and seriousness of the threat it poses. President Obama made their findings the subject of a recent speech at the Coast Guard Academy. Republicans reacted with their usual vitriol and contempt for facts. In spite of the obvious dangers we face from global warming, they’re more concerned that addressing it might cost them something and inconvenience the fossil fuel industry. As the military and others have made clear, it’s the cost of ignoring the issue that will be our undoing. Climate change is already causing more damage than terrorists could in their wildest dreams. For generations the U.S. led the world in greenhouse gas emissions. In spite of having only 4.4 percent of the world’s population, we still spew 19 percent of greenhouse gases. As the self-proclaimed leader of the free world, it’s about time we took the lead in reducing pollution to levels that our offspring can live with.
