BEAVER NOTES Andersen eager for debut with Beavers Oregon State hosts Weber State on Friday night Comment By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times MailTribune.com By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 8:03 PM By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 8:03 PM » Social News CORVALLIS — Oregon State football coach Gary Andersen sat down for his first game-week press conference on Monday in Gill Coliseum. Andersen and the Beavers will start the season against Weber State at 5 p.m. Friday at Reser Stadium. "First of all, it's always exciting to get to this point of the year," Andersen said. "These kids have put in countless hours of time and effort, energy and we've gone through a lot together already, but the season is such a fun part of the year. It's what the kids look forward to most. So it's an exciting time. It comes with a lot of anxious moments, especially with such a young team." Getting a new season underway is one thing. But it's the first game for the players in a new system. For Andersen, that means getting the players up to speed on all the ins and outs of game day and fine tuning everything that has been learned since the spring. He wants to keep it simple. "A new season," Andersen said. "That forces you as a coach to really do two things: Make sure you're trying to cross all your Ts and dot all your Is, No. 1, and also do your best to make sure the kids don't have too much information. "Very excited about this football game, very excited to watch these kids play. And that's really what you've got to do as a coach on game day is watch the team go out and play and hopefully execute at a high level and deal with adversity and good things, all the stuff that comes with it." Because of the circumstances surrounding the game for the Beavers, Andersen knows the players will be amped up and emotions will be running high. Andersen has made it a point of emphasis during recent days. "You have to talk about that. There's a ton of emotion and this game needs to be played with emotion. It is a huge part of it," he said. "But we've talked long and hard the last five or six days that we need to stay right here. We can't get too high at the beginning of the game, we can't get too low when things don't go our way. We have to be able to deal with adversity. So you have to stay right in the middle of things and that means play with composure. That means have mental toughness." Landing Weber State — a school based in Ogden, Utah — for the first game of the Andersen era was a coincidence. The game was scheduled before he was hired at OSU. Andersen and Weber State coach Jay Hill go way back and Andersen recruited Hill to play for Utah State. "I didn't really care who was on the schedule when I took this job so I didn't study it before, so I would say probably within the first week I looked at the schedule and had an idea that, yep, there sat Weber State," Andersen said. "Ironically, our first game at Utah State we played Utah. So that seems to follow me a little bit, that state of Utah." WHO'S THE STARTER: Seth Collins and Marcus McMaryion will both take snaps at quarterback for the Beavers on Friday. Andersen said there's no timetable on naming a starter. "It'll be what call we think fits best against what we believe they're going to do on the first snap of the game from a defensive standpoint to our offensive standpoint," Andersen said. "So it won't be that this guy is taking the first snap because he's got the upper hand, it'll be just whatever play in the opener is set for that young man." DEPTH CHART: The depth chart for the Weber State game was also released on Monday. There were no major surprises. There were a few "ors" regarding starters, including at QB. At left defensive end, Lavonte Barnett and Jalen Grimble are both listed at No. 1, as are Rommel Mageo and Manase Hungalu at the Mike linebacker spot. Storm Barrs-Woods and Chris Brown are also at the top spot at running back. Isaac Seumalo is listed as the starter at right guard, Kyle Peko is No. 1 at nose tackle and Treston Decoud is No. 1 at left cornerback. GOOD RUNNING BACKS: The Beavers want to establish a strong run game and Andersen likes to stockpile plenty of running backs. He said the current group is coming along with Deltron Sands, Damien Haskins and Ryan Nall backing up Barrs-Woods and Brown. "So it's a good crew of young men at that running back position," Andersen said. "Each one of them is a little bit different and unique within (his) style, but you can still run the plays that we ask them to run. "Inside zone, outside zone. We're a spread offense, you've got to get on the edges of the defense, but you've still got to be able to stick the power play in there when we need it."
