Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 1, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 1, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 1, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 1, 1916 COLOR SIGNS TO MARK PACIFIC, CRATER, HIGHWAYS The regular monthly meeting of the Medford Commercial club will be held tomorrow evening at the public library hall. Members are requested to remember this date and this meeting. Their attendance is desired. A. L. Meigs, president of the Automobile Trail Blazing association Inc., will be present and address the club on the subject of color signs along all of the automobile highways of importance in the United States. A uniform system of signs is desired. It is proposed to make the signs intelligible at a glance, instead of using the signs of words at first installed. This color system will be fully explained by Mr. Meigs at the meeting tomorrow night. He has a grist of information of special interest to automobile owners everywhere on the continent. This will be included in the address. The red trail extends from New York to Seattle, a distance of 3,500 miles. The year before this "trail" was completed there were less than 25 automobiles that made the trip through between these two points. The year following its complete (last year) more than 6,000 autos registered on the through trip. THRILLING FILM AT STAR TODAY Inasmuch as few mystery stories have proven successful when adapted to motion pictures, Manager Sharits of the Star theatre considers himself lucky in securing the five reel Selig Red Seal play "The Circular Staircase." This exciting film will be shown today and the critics who have passed judgment on it have declared it to be one of the most successful films of its class ever produced. The novel from which the film was adapted was written by Mary Robert Rinehart and its characters and theme are too well known to need repeating. It is sufficient to say that every thrill that endeared the book to its readers will be found in the film and that the moments of suspense are even more numerous in the silent drama than they were on the printed page. Eugenie Besserer, the noted French actress is featured. The supporting cast is strong.
