DUCK NOTES Slow start by defense doesn't foil Ducks By Peter Fournier for the Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Peter Fournier for the Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 25, 2014 @ 12:57 am Updated Oct 25, 2014 at 12:58 AM By Peter Fournier for the Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 25, 2014 @ 12:57 am Updated Oct 25, 2014 at 12:58 AM » Social News SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A slow start in the first quarter for the Ducks’ defense didn’t carry over in a strong second quarter effort, allowing Oregon to cruise to a 59-41 win over California on Friday night. The Golden Bears’ offense torched the Ducks for 168 yards of total offense through the first two possessions of the game, then the Oregon defense stepped up. After the Bears started a drive at the Oregon 40 following a 17-yard punt by Ian Wheeler, a Cal chop block penalty sent the ball back into its territory, and that’s when Christian French turned on Oregon’s defense, at least for the moment. French forced Cal quarterback Jared Goff to fumble the ball before he attempted a pass, knocking the ball forward for a Ducks fumble recovery. The turnover resulted in a field goal. On the Bears’ next drive, the Oregon defense stopped Cal on a fourth-and-one deep inside Bears’ territory and, a little over 90 seconds later, Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota connected with Pharaoh Brown in the end zone to make it a 24-14 game. The Ducks forced the Bears to punt on the following drive, and Charles Brown’s dazzling 58-yard punt return touchdown made it 31-14 Oregon. Cal then responded with 14 unanswered points, and one touchdown was thanks in part to a Ducks turnover deep in their territory which allowed the Bears to close within just three points of their counterparts. But that’s as close as the Bears could get. “I think when it got to 31-14, I think a couple of our guys took a deep breath and relaxed too much,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. “That’s on all of us collectively. ... And against those guys you aren’t going to finish it in the first half. They’re too talented.” CAL FAILS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE: With the Ducks up only three points, quarterback Marcus Mariota was intercepted by Stefan McClure in the end zone with less than two minutes left in the half. The Bears couldn’t take it advantage of the big turnover, as they went three and out. However on the ensuing punt, Cal special teamer Jalen Jefferson shoved Oregon’s Ayele Forde into the ball before it was touched by another Oregon player, and the ball was recovered by the Bears. But Pac-12 Conference referee Jack Folliard declared that “by rule,” Jefferson wasn’t allowed to shove Forde into the ball, and Oregon retained possession. The Ducks went on to score on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to Dwayne Stanford to take a 10-point lead at halftime. Oregon also received the second half kickoff, and drove to the end zone minutes into the third quarter to up the advantage to 17 points in less than three total minutes of playing time. FIRST COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME: Friday night’s primetime matchup was the first NCAA football game held at Levi’s Stadium, which opened this year as the home of the San Francisco 49ers. In addition to college football, there have been international soccer friendlies, high school football games and Major League Soccer matches at the facility. This is the first Friday night game held at the facility. According to an Associated Press story, the game was held at Levi’s due to traffic concerns on a Friday night near the Berkeley campus, although the 49ers weren’t allowed to host a game on a weeknight due to traffic concerns in the surrounding area of the stadium. The announced attendance was 55,495, and most of the colors of those in attendance donned Oregon yellow. Game 3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals was also being held at the same time 40 miles away in San Francisco. Levi’s will host the Pac-12 Championship in December. The condition of the playing field, which has made headlines in the past few weeks, was “spectacular” on Friday night according to Helfrich. “It was very firm, it was very hard. I thought it was great,” he said. DUCKS BAND BANISHED: The Oregon Ducks marching band was seated in the fourth deck of Levi’s Stadium, while the Cal band received tickets in the lower reserved or field level deck of the facility. Oregon’s communications staff directed questions to Cal’s staff, who couldn’t confirm why the Oregon band was given tickets in the upper deck before press time on Friday night.
