‘Stangs stave off Salem By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Jun 25, 2022 04:08 PM A A Medford needed every bit of its fast start Friday to fend off the visiting Salem Withnell Dodgers and remain undefeated in the Coach K Memorial at Harry & David Field. The Mustangs gained the advantage with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 6-1 through three innings before holding on for a 7-4 victory. The win was the eighth straight for the American Legion AAA Mustangs (13-2) and allowed them to move to 3-0 in the tournament entering Saturday’s key late-night showdown with the Idaho Falls Bandits. Depending on Saturday’s late outcome, Medford will either play in a 1 p.m. championship game Sunday (win) or a 10:30 a.m. tilt (loss) between the No. 2 teams from each five-team division at H&D. Schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Jace Miller went 3-for-4 with one RBI to help power a 12-hit attack for the Mustangs against Salem, with Tanner Douglas going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI and Aiden Horsley 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Triston Wallace also drove in two runs for Medford to support starting pitcher Owen Thompson, who picked up the win after working 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs. Cody Borraggine came on in the ninth to close the door on a rally by Salem, striking out two with one hit allowed.
