The Medford Parks and Recreation Commission recently approved the assessment by Leathers and Associates. “It’s a wooden structure,” said LaFeve. “Boards rot out if not sealed properly.” The Kiwanis Club and The Family Connection were two organizations that helped get the funding for the playground. LaFeve said Robert Leathers installed similar wooden playgrounds around the country about the same time. Leathers would come into a town and meet with local children to see what they wanted out of a playground, LaFeve said. “That structure was the result of it,” he said. “And it was built over a couple of weekends.” Still, the construction required a small army of 1,500 volunteers to build everything, LaFeve said. The wooden structure looks a lot different than newer equipment and was probably built to different standards than are required today, he noted. Brian Sjothun, parks and recreation director, said the assessment by Leathers and Associates should give the city a better idea of the work that needs to be done. “It is our goal to preserve that structure as best as we can,” he said.
