South rolls past Bend, braces for big test South Medford continued its impressive start to the girls basketball season with a 62-44 win over visiting Bend on Saturday. Now comes its first real test. The Panthers, who have won two non-conference games by an average of 20 points, are host to Sheldon on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. The Irish have a five-point loss to No. 2-ranked Oregon City and have beaten No. 5 Crescent Valley by 14. "It�s a big game for us," said Panthers coach Andrea Wegner, noting that South was routed by the Springfield team last year in "probably our worst game of the season." Against Bend, South Medford played a clean game, turning the ball over only seven times, against a Lava Bears squad that didn�t apply much pressure. "We were more patient, less hurried," said Wegner, comparing the game to the previous night�s 53-31 win over Mountain View. "We were more disciplined on both offense and defense." Guard Kellie Thomas had 20 points and nine rebounds for South, which opened 10-point lead early and kept the cushion until pulling away late. "She did a really good job of just creating her shots and hitting them," said Wegner. Whitney Grant added 14 points and six assists, Emily Perttu 11 points, seven assists and three steals and Karla Zenz eight points and 10 rebounds.
